A Deliberate Progression from Operations to Executive Strategy

The Global Sports Business (GSB) curriculum is deliberately structured. Rather than offering a randomized menu of electives, our program utilizes a cohort-based, five-semester scaffold. Each term builds directly upon the last, engineered through backward design in partnership with Rutgers’ Institute for Teaching, Innovation, & Inclusive Pedagogy (TIIP) ensuring students develop a comprehensive, compounding skill set.

Below is the term-by-term pathway designed to transform driven students into industry-ready executives.

TERM 1: Foundations of Sport Organizations

The baseline of the business. Before you can lead an organization, you must understand how it operates internally and legally.

  • Financial Strategy & Risk: Grounding decisions in financial realities, understanding budget allocations, and managing organizational risk.
  • Sports Law & Contracts: Navigating the legal frameworks that govern modern sports, from liability to athlete agreements.
  • Market Strategy: Understanding the foundational economics of the sport industry and how organizations position themselves within the global market.

TERM 2: Revenue, Labor, and Value Creation

The engine of the industry. This term focuses on how sport organizations monetize their products and manage their human capital.

  • Sponsorship & Sales Structures: Developing high-level corporate partnerships, B2B sales strategies, and measuring return on investment (ROI).
  • Brand Development: Building and sustaining brand equity in a crowded, global entertainment landscape.
  • Labor Systems & NIL: Examining collective bargaining, player associations, and the rapidly evolving Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) commercialization ecosystems.

TERM 3: Administration, Facilities, and Issues in Sport

Execution, leadership, and navigating complex organizational dynamics. This term shifts the focus to the physical delivery of sports and the human elements required to lead effectively.

  • Facility and Event Management: The logistics, security, revenue optimization, and operational execution of large-scale sporting events and venue management.
  • Sport Administration: High-level administrative frameworks, governance, and the day-to-day management of professional sport organizations and collegiate athletic departments.
  • Issues in Sport (Cultural Change & Conflict Resolution): Navigating complex interpersonal and organizational dynamics, driving positive cultural change, and developing effective conflict resolution strategies within diverse sport environments.

TERM 4: Media and Strategy Leadership

The executive mindset. The final academic term prepares students to take the helm, managing public perception and long-term vision.

  • Media Dynamics & Broadcasting: Navigating the shifting landscape of sports media rights, digital streaming, and public relations.
  • Advanced Leadership Frameworks: Transitioning from tactical management to strategic, visionary leadership.
  • Long-Term Strategic Planning: Formulating and executing multi-year organizational strategies in response to technological and cultural shifts.

TERM 5: The Executive Residency (Capstone)

The Residency-as-Lab. Moving beyond the classroom to solve live industry problems.

  • Project-Based Application: Instead of a traditional, unstructured internship, students complete a formal academic residency.
  • Real-World Deliverables: Students are embedded with industry partners (including the Rutgers Big Ten Athletics pipeline) to tackle complex, live organizational challenges.
  • Executive Presentation: The capstone culminates in the delivery of professional-grade analysis, strategic recommendations, and a final presentation to industry stakeholders.

Skills and Certifications

In parallel with the academic coursework, students engage with our continuous Career Hub. This ensures graduates do not just understand theory, but possess the hard, technical skills required by modern sports employers. Throughout the five terms, students are trained and guided to complete industry-recognized certifications, including:

  • Data Analytics: Tableau Certification
  • Project Management: Agile Certification
  • CRM & Marketing: Salesforce Marketing Cloud Email Specialist
